Proficiency in this Skill Category enables you to recognise many of the creatures that you may encounter. The creatures recognisable with this Skill Category are native to the Prime Material Plane, this plane of existence. A complete list of all these creatures would be very long. Instead, a table provided in the appendix lists many of the recognisable creatures that are commonly met whist adventuring, and the level of proficiency you need to recognise them. You do not need this Skill category to recognise creatures listed as LEVEL 0, but you must be able to clearly see creatures to recognise them. Creatures disguised as other creatures will only be recognised as the disguise, not the creature under the disguise and you would also need the RECOGNISE DISGUISE Skill to determine if there were any disguised creatures.
If you encounter a creature you cannot recognise, either because you don’t have the sufficient skill or because it’s very rarely seen you will be informed that it is a “Creature Unknown”. This skill allows you to make an educated guess as to what group of creatures it belongs to. For instance, if you have RECOGNISE CREATURE II and you meet an Ogre, you could tell it’s an Uruk of some type. Some of the Groups are as follows;
Olog Ogre Magi, Trogre, Troll kin or Trolls and related creatures
Uruk Bugbear, Goblinkin, Ogres, Orcs and similar creatures
Animal Wolves, Bears, Giant Spiders and other animals
Plant Mushroomoid, Stun Jelly, Shambling Mounds and other plant creatures.
Chaos Broo, Owlbear, Poibear and other Chaotic, mutated creatures
Beast Race Cat people, Wolf-man, Minotaur, Lizardmen and other half animal, half human creatures.
Humanoid Humanoid creatures not already covered above such as Dryads, Illithids or Siren.
Any creatures not listed in this section of the table could be an Enchanted creature, Extra-planer creature or Undead, but if it is not, it’s a rare and unusual type of creature. In this case, you will be informed that it is a "Creature Unknown" and you cannot classify it into any group. After a number of such sightings by characters with the sufficient Skill level, it will be classed as a "Creature under Research" and within six months of real time it will be added to the list of creatures recognisable with this Skill Category.
